About our topic

The choices we make:A short primer on evaluating you site, at home and on the job, to develop a list of species that will thrive to help create habitats centered on positive outcomes and species interaction. Kelsay will help you take a more nuanced look at the landscapes we live in and how we can augment them without losing our sense of place. We need to put away ideas of gardening for one thing or another and start looking beyond the edges of our yards and take stock of our local botanic pantheon to make a garden or restoration a bit more complete.

About the speaker

Kelsay Shaw has a B.S. in botany from Eastern Illinois University and has been doing work in the green industry for over 30 years. He has traveled the mid-west exploring native habitat to further his understanding of native flora and its relationship to local fauna; as well as the impact of fragmentation of these habitats. A partner at Possibility Place Nursery he and his family have tried to help make their clients (and people in general) aware of the positive contributions planting native plants in their yard can have on the local environment through consulting on projects and giving lectures on arange of related topics. Only through showing people the connections of native plants to native critters to us can we hope to make our world a slightly brighter place.

Sponsored by Natural Habitat Evanston

We are an all-volunteer community group of about 1,500 members, spreading the word on creating habitat for insects, birds, and other wildlife. We aim to change the culture of lawns: leaving your leaves is the simplest first step; the second step is adding a native shrub or tree to shrink your lawn. We show how to transition from turf with low-cost cardboard methods, which keystone native plants to choose, that insects chewing on leaves is a ‘win’ (don't reach for pesticide), how turning off unnecessary lights saves insects and birds (and human health), and how to make your windows bird-friendly (because if you are going to invite birds to your yard, give them safe passage). We plant a lot of native trees and shrubs, especially at schools, parks and in the 2nd and 5th Wards. We encourage people to think outside the lawn with No Mow May. Our Pollinator Pledge is a central focus of all our outreach and education, and a great way to spread the word to your neighbors.
